IEEE LWMOOC 2019 Best Paper Award on MOOC quality assessment

November 27, 2019

From the 23rd to the 25th of October, the 6th Edition of the IEEE Learning With MOOCs (LWMOOC 2019) Conference was held at the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, and organized by the IEEE Education Society.

LWMOOC is an international IEEE conference that offers opportunities for professionals, educators and researchers to discuss and collaborate on the latest advances in online education and MOOC.

This year, the Online Education Development Office’s (OEDO) paper submission entitled, “Improving MOOC quality using learning analytics tools”, received the Best Paper award. OEDO is part of the Tokyo Tech Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL).

In this paper the OEDO learning analytics team consisting of graduate teaching assistants (TA) led by Prof. Jeffrey S. Cross, presented new methods to assess the quality of MOOCs based on text and video transcripts analysis, evaluating transcript readability, lecture listenability as well as by analyzing the learner discussion board posts using sentiment analysis.

Believing in the importance of developing new educational technology tools and using them to measure MOOC quality, the OEDO team has been focusing on improving the Tokyo Tech’s MOOCs on EdX.  The actual analysis of MOOC content using natural language processing and learning analytics is still relatively novel in this field. After developing various python based tools (scripts), which are posted on Github, they have used the tools to improve the Tokyo Tech MOOCs on edX.

Below are comments from the paper co-authors,

"I am pleased to receive the best paper award on behalf of the online education development office (OEDO) and the teaching assistants (TA) that did the learning analytics research which it covers. We began doing learning analytics research on edX MOOCs about 3 years ago and it is gratifying to see this work was highly evaluated by the conference organizers. We are grateful for the financial support provided by the Institute of Liberal Arts’ and CITL, Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) Program ” expressed Prof. Cross after receiving the award. “This award is a totally unexpected present for me. I am honored to be a part of the team.” says D3 student Nopphon a TA working in OEDO for 3 years. “The award is definitely a huge encouragement to me to continue to do analysis in this exciting field of online education,” stated M2 Tan , another member from the OEDO Analytics team and expressing excitement for the future prospects of the team.

Finally, along the same lines, D2 May adds “I feel that the online learning community is starting to see the value of our efforts and we are moving in the right direction. I hope we can produce more work that would be valuable not just to Tokyo Tech but for educators around the world as well.”
